Reflexology
Reflexology
Reflexology is a holistic healing art – a form of therapeutic foot massage – which falls into the realm of ‘alternative’ or better put, ‘complimentary’ medicine not included in the toolbox of mainstream, orthodox Western medicine. Disease is approached from the understanding of man as a complex organism comprised of body, mind and spirit. The object of holistic treatment is to induce a state of balance and harmony throughout the entire organism. Reflexology is a method for activating the healing powers of the body. It is both old and new. From ancient texts, illustrations, and artifacts, we know that the early Chinese, Japanese, Indians, Russians, Mayans and Egyptians worked on the feet to promote good health. Today many of these same techniques have been developed into a modern, scientific method called reflexology. Incorporating the ancient Chinese concept of meridian therapy, based on the premise that energy channels or pathways traverse throughout the body, linking organs and body parts. The efficacy of reflexology is believed to be the result of stimulating and revitalizing this energy flow. In traditional Eastern medical systems – notably the Chinese healing system and the Indian Ayurvedic system – it has long been accepted that health is basted on the harmonious flow of these energies as well as the energy zones that run throughout the body and reflex areas in the feet corresponding to all the major organs, glands and body parts. Reflexology is truly a holistic approach with many benefits such as reducing stress and inducing deep relaxation. It improves circulation, cleanses the body of toxins and impurities, re-balances the whole system and revitalizes energy. Problem areas on the feet relate to problem areas in the body. Which is the cause and which the effect is questionable, it is a ‘chicken or egg’ situation. Congestions along a meridian or on a reflex – caused by either internal or external factors – will disrupt the body’s equilibrium, the posture will dwindle and in turn can have an adverse effect on other reactionary points within the system both internal and external. Reflexology is preventive health care that nurtures the relationship of one with the body and is, thus, a good tool for improving understanding in the whole, healthy individual.
