Acupuncture

Based on the five basic elements in nature (metal, water, wood, fire, and earth), Traditional Chinese Medicine is an ancient system that has been used to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease for over 4,000 years. Acupuncture and Chinese herbalism are gaining popularity here in the West and some additional therapies include moxibustion (heat therapy), auricular (ear) acupuncture, Chinese massage, and qua sha (a massage-like therapy involving the use of tools). Acupuncture has been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) to work for a wide variety of conditions including many types of pain, depression, anxiety, addiction, digestive issues, sleep disturbances, and a myriad of other conditions, although the exact mechanisms by which Acupuncture does work are not yet fully understood by western science. It has been scientifically determined that humans are unique bio-energetic beings; acupuncture works with these abstract energies in the body. TCM recognizes that there is an abstract life force (qi or energy) that flows through all things. Qi flows along energetic pathways, or meridians, in the body, which are related to the organs, lymphatic, muscular, and nervous systems. When the balance of this flow of energy is disturbed due to trauma, stress, diet, or any number of other factors, pain or illness is the result.

TCM treats the underlying factors that cause a condition or illness. Treatment plans are formulated through a complete examination, which includes taking information on medical history, current symptoms, feeling the pulse, observing the tongue, and more. Acupuncture is a very personalized method of treatment. There is no one particular point prescription for conditions as we see them in the western world. For example, one particular study of TCM and ulcer patients found 6 different TCM treatment patterns among the test subjects, which all carried the same western medicine diagnosis of peptic ulcer.
